83% of sellers feel held back at work. Are we helping, or adding obstacles?
Most sales organizations are trying to make their sellers better. Fewer are asking whether the organization is making it unnecessarily difficult for good sellers to be good.
Before adding training, another process or another dashboard, ask what is getting in the way.
Sometimes the seller needs development. Sometimes the system needs fixing. Good enablement starts by understanding the difference.
Gartner seller-motivation research, 2022: 83% of surveyed sellers reported medium or high “drag,” meaning demotivation at work.
Your dashboard shows 24 metrics. Which ones help you sell?
Revenue. Attainment. Pipeline. Win rate. All useful numbers.
But after looking at them, does the seller know where to focus? Does the manager know what to investigate? Does the leader know which decision needs attention?
Showing the numbers is the starting point. Helping people use them is the work.
McKinsey, 2018: observed dashboards with up to 24 metrics, while often only one or two influenced business outcomes.
Most enablement work can start with three questions.
Sales leaders are constantly being asked to improve something. Add training. Change the process. Launch a dashboard. Bring in a new tool.
Those may all be reasonable responses. But before choosing the response, define the current state, the desired state, and what is actually standing between them.
The intervention should come last.
If the plan is completed once, presented, and then forgotten, it is documentation.
A useful plan keeps the important things visible: where growth can come from, who matters, what is missing, and what the next action is.
Training should start with the work, not the curriculum.
What are sellers trying to do right now?
Run a stronger discovery call. Build an account strategy. Navigate a complex deal. Cross-sell into an existing customer.
Start there. Then build the learning, coaching, and job tools around the work.
The dashboard becomes how the manager sees the business.
The account plan becomes how the seller thinks about the account.
The coaching tool becomes how the manager prepares for the conversation.
Useful enablement becomes part of the work. It does not sit beside it.
